Annual Maintenance Shutdown 2020

This is a friendly reminder that the Wellington Cable Car will be closed between Monday 20 July and Friday 7 August 2020 for its scheduled Annual Maintenance. Barring any unexpected gremlins, we expect to reopen on Saturday 8 August 2020, at 8:30am.
Each year, we need to close operations to conduct routine maintenance and ensure the cars, tunnels, track and safety systems are compliant and safe for our passengers. Normally this can be achieved within 5-7 days of work. So why are we closing for 3 weeks do you ask? This year, we are replacing 2 bogies and reconditioning 1 bogie in the 19 days closing period.
What is a bogie?
A bogie is a chassis or frame underneath the Cable Cars. It has two axles and is able to pivot to allow the cars to move through the passing loop. It also provides suspension to keep the ride smooth. Each car has two bogies (one at the top and one at the bottom). They weigh 1.8 tonnes each and have 120 different parts. The bogies under the current Cable Cars have been in service since 1979, and after over 40 years of service the bogies need to be replaced and reconditioned to meet safety standards
.
Major maintenance work will be carried out on the track between Kelburn Station and Talavera Station. These work will include sleeper and rail replacements.

How do I get to Kelburn and back again during the shutdown?
There are no replacement buses this year.
Please take bus number 22 as alternative. You can catch it from The Terrace at Aurora Terrace, Victoria University Kelburn Campus and Kelburn (Upland Road). See Metlink for the bus timetable. 
 

FARES 

For a fast and convenient way to experience the Cable Car, buy your ticket online before you arrive. Please remember that you will still need to queue for the Cable Car on busy days.

One Way Ticket

For travel up to the top of the Cable Car at Kelburn to enjoy the views and surrounding attractions. To get back down into the city, there are several walks around the hillsides of the Botanic Garden including a beautiful 40-minute stroll back down to the city centre via the historic Bolton Street Cemetery and the Beehive.

If you decide to take the Cable Car back down, simply catch the next car going down and pay for a one way ticket at our ticket booth on your return.

 

Return Ticket

For travel in both directions on the Cable Car. This allows you plenty of time to enjoy the views and explore the surrounding attractions at the summit. There is no time restriction.

When you are finished, catch the next car going back down.

A car leaves every 10 minutes.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

 
  • Children under 5 years old travel for free.
  • Accessible Concession is only valid on Snapper Cards. 
  • Multi-trips are loaded electronically onto a Snapper+ or Cable Car Multi-trip Card. Charges apply for new cards.
  • Multi-trip tickets are only available to individual passengers to enable them to make multiple journeys. They are not valid for group travel.
  • Online tickets can be purchased and printed from any computer, or shown on-screen on a mobile device.
  • No cash refunds are given on tickets purchased online.
  • When purchasing a Student ticket or using a SuperGold Card, customers must also have their Student ID or SuperGold card with them.
  • Snapper is available to passengers travelling through Lambton Quay station only.
     

Snapper Card


The Snapper Card is Wellington’s contactless transport ticketing smartcard, which can be used to pay for discounted fares on the Cable Car, Bus Services and Taxis. 

You need a Snapper + card to use Snapper on the Cable Car. If you have an older Snapper card without a ‘+’, please visit a Snapper Service Centre to transfer your balance and/or travel pass to a Snapper + card free of charge.

Snapper is available to passengers traveling through Lambton Quay only.

Child and Tertiary student fares on Snapper
 
If you have a child concession on your Snapper, you will be automatically charged a child fare. If you would like to get a Wellington Cable Car tertiary student concession applied to your snapper, please click here and apply using the online application form on the Snapper website.
 

Multi Trip Card
Please register your multi-trip card by emailing your name and card number to info@wellingtoncablecar.co.nz. We are keeping track on any traveling customers. 

Multi trip cards are only available to individual passengers to enable multiple journeys at the Cable Car. They are NOT valid for group travel.

New issue Multi trip cards incur a one-off fee of $2.50. Charge also applies to lost or stolen cards. Damaged cards will be exchanged free of charge.

When reloading trips onto a Student Card, you must present your valid NZ Student ID upon purchase.

Multi trip card trips are valid for one year from the date of purchase. No refunds are given on part used Multi trip cards. 

Cable Car Card

School Groups

All members of a school group will be charged at the Child rate. Please make a booking for school groups at info@wellingtoncablecar.co.nz.

School group bookings for the Cable Car Museum need to be made separately with the Museum Trust on 04 475 3578 or cablecar@wmt.org.nz.

 

Tour Groups

Although you can show up on the day, we prefer to receive bookings for large groups so we can confirm dates, manage any potential overcrowding and also notify you in the unlikely event there is an operational problem with the Cable Car on the day.

There is no charge for a cancelled booking except where some other element is included in the Cable Car trip such as packed lunches, a Cable Car Museum tour or Space Place (Carter Observatory)/Zealandia tour where we may incur additional costs.
