For greater convenience, you can buy your tickets online before you arrive. You can then simply scan your ticket from your mobile device at the entrance gates. The tickets are valid for six months.
During the cruise ship season (see2019/20), the Cable Car is busy during 9am to 2pm and generally quieter in the afternoon.
The Cable Car is not weather-dependent and is open all year round (except annual maintenance period and Christmas day). At the top of the Cable Car there is an indoor viewing platform with floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can watch over the city at any time.
Once you arrive at the top of the Cable Car, exit to the right side of the car for the main lookout area. It is here where you'll find the best views, get your camera ready!
We are nicknamed the 'windiest city in the world', so make sure to bring a warm jacket for your walk through the Botanic Garden. Also, bring water, good walking shoes and some spending money. And don't forget your camera too!
The Cable Car is wheelchair accessible and the upper doors of the cars are leveled with the boarding platforms for easy access. We are one of only two Wellington organisations to have received a Platinum Rating from Be. Accessible for our efforts! Check out our accessibility guide (PDF or Word Doc).
With the exception of disability assist dogs, dogs are not allowed to travel in the Cable Car due to health and safety reasons.
Bicycles are permitted at the Cable Car at the driver's discretion. Please note that we are unable to carry bicycles when the Cable Car is busy.
As Wellington Cable Car is also used as a form of public transport, please exercise the same curtesy, commonsense and safety precautions that you would on any public transport service around the world.
