Thank you for your loyal support, helping keep our little red cars in business during the ups and downs of the past couple of years. 

As a local, commuter or frequent rider on Wellington Cable Car, we wanted to let you know that from 1 October 2023, Snapper cards will no longer be available as a payment option on the Wellington Cable Car. 

We understand that this change may cause inconvenience, and for that, we sincerely apologise. We value your loyalty and strive to provide you with the best possible experience. Our decision regarding Snapper was not made lightly. 

However, the good news is that we have several other products which offer you even greater discounts on your regular commute. We expect that local users would already be taking advantage of the discounted fares offered with our 5, 10 or 25 multi-trip, concession, or membership cards. If not, please check out pricing information below or ask our friendly staff at the ticket kiosk.

So, why is Snapper going? 
Snapper has provided payment options to the Wellington Cable Car for the past 10 years but the current solution is now “end of life” and the existing Snapper solution for the Wellington Cable Car is not compatible with a transition to the National Ticketing Solution (NTS). 

Faced with the choice of significant investment to upgrade our existing solution, or waiting to invest in the NTS, we have elected to pause until the NTS is available. This will ensure we can continue operating on the same self-funding, user-pays model – at no cost to the ratepayer – established over the past 121 years of operations.  

Do you have a multi-trip product loaded onto your Snapper card? 
Our Snapper equipment will be removed on 30 September 2023 so you can continue to use up your trips until that date. Any trips you haven’t used by 30 September can be transferred onto a Wellington Cable Car multi-trip card at the ticket kiosk. You’ll have until 31 December 2023 to transfer your trips over, but if you have the time, why not come and see us today and we’ll transfer the trips for you straight away! 

Do you hold a Cable Car Membership card? 
As a membership card holder this change will not affect you, however if you do decide to discontinue your membership at any time, we wanted to let you know that there are other regular-rider discounts available including our 5, 10 and 25 ‘multi-trip’ products which continue to offer a more affordable payment option than Snapper.
