Dogs on the Cable Car
Dogs of the Cable Car calendar
In 2023, we wanted to celebrate our community and encourage locals to bring their furry friends on the cars. We asked them to take photos of their dogs Cable Car moments, either on or around the cars, to then submit for the opportunity to be featured in a calendar.
We also paired up with Blind Low Vision and extended the narrative behind the calendar to raise awareness for those in our community of low vision. The Dogs of the Cable Car calendar is a not-for-profit project and is a gift from the community for the community, with all the proceeds from calendar sales going to the Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dog programme.
Once again, a big thank you to everyone who supported us with this project and entered their four-legged friend's Cable Car moments over the years. We couldn't create this calendar without you and your fur babies.
Casting call for 2027
Our much-loved Dogs of the Cable Car calendar is back for 2027, and we're looking for 12 very good dogs to take centre stage on or near the Cable Car! Could your pooch be our next four-legged calendar star?
We're looking for dogs with a little something special. Your pooch should have:
- Main-character energy
- Puppy dog eyes
- A big personality
- A good sense of direction around the Cable Car
- The ability to look very, very good in front of a camera
Your dog doesn't need to be professionally photographed. Just make sure the photo is taken in landscape mode and the Cable Car is visible near your dog, then just let their personality shine!
You can submit multiple unique entries, so if you've got more than one very good photo, we'd love to see them.
Submissions are open from 14 August to 6 September 2026.
To keep in mind while taking your photos
Our calendar is designed around landscape photography, so please submit a horizontal photo rather than a portrait or square image.
Your photo should feature your dog on or near the Wellington Cable Car. Think riding in the car, standing outside a terminal, posing with the tracks in the background, or visiting the intermediate stations.
Make sure your pooch is the star of the shot. Clear, well-lit photos where we can see their face and personality work best.
Please submit the highest-quality version of your photo available. Avoid screenshots, heavily compressed images, filters or images that are blurry or too dark.
Travelling with dogs
Companion Dogs
Dogs must be handled by someone 16 years of age or older, and a limit of two dogs per person. Dogs must be on a lead at all times while on the Cable Car premises.
Companion dogs must enter and exit from the lower landing. There are paw patches on the lower landing floor to help guide you to the designated spot for dogs. The upper landing of the car is reserved for accessibility access for those with a wheelchair or pram.
Dogs can travel at any time within our opening hours.
Service dogs
Guide and service dogs take priority and are not required to stay in designated areas of the cars. They may stay with their owner, regardless of where they choose to sit.
To learn how accessible the Cable Car is for those who are living with impairments, visit our accessibility page here.
