Cars run every 10 minutes, on the 10. When demand is higher, our cars may operate more frequently than our usual 10-minute timetable. Open every day except for Christmas Day.

Fare Options
Casual Riders
Purchase your general admission tickets online here or at our ticket box.
One-way ticket: $6.50
For travel up to the top of the Cable Car Summit OR down to Lambton Quay in the city centre.
To return to the city, there are several walks around the hillsides of the Wellington Botanic Garden, including a beautiful 40-minute stroll via the historic Bolton Street Cemetery and the Beehive.
If you have only bought a one-way and decided to return on the Cable Car, simply catch the next car going up or down and pay for a one-way ticket at the Cable Car Ticket Office.
Return ticket: $12
For one uphill and one downhill journey on the Cable Car. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the views and explore the nearby attractions at the Cable Car Summit or in the city centre. There is no time restriction on your return journey.
Catch any car to return to Lambton Quay or Kelburn Terminal.
For journeys not travelling through Lambton Quay, please pay the driver (cash only) or present your tickets.
Frequent Riders
Whether you are someone who uses the Wellington Cable Car a couple of times a year or uses it every day, we have cost-effective options for everyone's transport needs. Both of our card options can be purchased from our Ticket Box located at the end of Cable Car Lane off Lambton Quay.
Multi-trip card
We have a variety of multi-trip options: 5, 10 and 25 for adult, concession and child passengers.
Our multi-trip cards are valid for 1 year. Trips can be reloaded onto the card via our ticket box.
3-month membership card
Our 3-month membership card offers unlimited travel on the Wellington Cable Car for 90 days from the date of purchase. Memberships are also offered for adult, concession and child passengers.

Children aged under five (5) years are eligible for free travel on the Cable Car and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Children aged between 5 and 15 years are entitled to child rates when travelling on the Cable Car.
Concession pricing is only available from our Cable Car ticket box at the end of Cable Car Lane off Lambton Quay.

Multi-trip Cards can only be used by the person to whom they are issued. They are NOT valid for group travel.

Membership Cards can only be used by the person to whom they are issued. They are NOT valid for group travel. Memberships are valid for 90 days from the date of purchase.
Free off-peak travel is available to New Zealand SuperGold cardholders.

All day weekends and public holidays.
During on-peak travel, New Zealand SuperGold cardholders are eligible for the concession rate for general admission, multi-trip and membership cards.
Please have your SuperGold card with you to easily scan the barcode on the back of your card or to show proof of eligibility.
Please note that nationally funded concessions, such as free off-peak transport, are not available to Australian Seniors Card cardholders.
Dogs have been welcome on the Cable Car since December 2021.
Im-paw-tant information to know before you and your furry friend travel with us
- 2 dogs max per person, and anyone handling a dog must be 16 years of age
- Service dogs take priority
- Dogs must enter, exit and travel on the lower landing
- Dogs can travel at any time within our opening hours
- Dogs ride free

Snapper is no longer available as a form of payment from 1 October 2023. For more information, head to our Snapper Update.
Although you can show up on the day, we prefer to receive bookings for large groups of 10 people and above, so we can confirm dates, manage any potential overcrowding and also notify you in the unlikely event there is an operational problem with the Cable Car on the day.
