Wellington Cable Car will be closed for from 7 June to 14 August 2016 for a major upgrade of the electric drive and control system. The last equipment upgrade was completed in 1979 and technology has progressed significantly since then. This project will allow the Cable Car to continue to operate reliably and safely into the future.
At the same time, the Wellington City Council is undertaking significant construction work in the Cable Car Lane and the passenger terminal which includes a new, resilient overhead canopy and the ticket kiosk.
A replacement bus service will operate during the shutdown between Lambton Quay (at the end of Cable Car Lane) and Kelburn via the Terrace and Victoria University's Kelburn Campus.
We will resume normal services at 7:00am on Monday 15 August .
Please be aware of the closure dates when placing tour group bookings.
The Cable Car will run reduced services during December 2016.
For a fast and convenient way to experience the Cable Car, buy your ticket online before you arrive. Please remember that you will still need to queue for the Cable Car on busy days.
You can download an electronic copy of our brochure for your visit: English, Maori, Chinese (中文), Korean (한국어) Japanese (日本語), German (Deutsch), Spanish (Español), French (Française).
